Japanese foreign minister enters race to lead nation

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso announced on Friday that he would run to succeed Junichiro Koizumi as PM.

reported.

Koizumi has long insisted that he would step down when his term as president of the ruling party expires in September, and the conservative Aso was expected to announce a bid.

Polls indicate, however, that Aso lags significantly in popularity behind the perceived front-runner to replace Koizumi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe.

Abe has not yet officially announced his candidacy.
