The State Government had appointed her the council chairperson in 2003. The resignation comes in the wake of the Election Commission announcing the election to the Rajya Sabha seat on June 15. The seat had fallen vacant because of her disqualification.

Though the Samajwadi Party has planned to field her for the same seat once again, a formal announcement is yet to be made.

The commission had disqualified her because the UPFDC post was found to be an office of profit.
