Jaya moves SC on RS membership issue

The Election Commission has forwarded its opinion to President APJ Abdul Kalam on a complaint against Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan that sought her disqualification from the Upper House, EC sources said.

However, the recommendations made by the Commission were not immediately known.

The EC had in October last year issued notice to Bachchan, film actress and Rajya Sabha MP, acting on a complaint that she was holding an office of profit and hence should be disqualified from Parliament.

The Commission had acted on a reference from the office of the President following a complaint sent to him by Madan Mohan that Bachchan was appointed chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Corporation after becoming a member of Rajya Sabha.
