Many of these women are abused, molested and raped and forced to work long hours on low wages and no job security.
House workers are part of the unorganised sector, and hence, have no help of the trade unions and have little help of the law. For the tribal women it is just the worst of a bad situation.
The women are poor and illiterate. They have no clue of their rights; they are unsure of help from the law and do not to seek it for fear of losing their jobs.
Their agents (many of whom are not from the church or any credible organisation), who are their only support system in a new land, are more interested in making money and less interested in the women's welfare. The agents know that the women will put up with hardship and exploitation because there is only starvation to go back to in Jharkhand.
However, the bad life is mostly for the younger women who have made Delhi their home recently. The older ones have been in the city for more than 20 years. Most of them have adapted themselves to the pace of Delhi life. They can speak English and even have cell-phones. They have become ambitious and even want to go abroad and earn in dollars.
