Jilted lover sets student afire

An intermediate girl student was set on fire in district headquarter town of Chittor by the driver of the auto-rickshaw, she was using to travel to college daily, after she refused his advances.

The girl K Tapaswini(18) suffered severe burns and is battling for life at the Christian Medical College Hospital at Vellore, Tamil Nadu.

Chitoor Urban Circle Inspector Sudhakar Reddy said that the auto driver identified as Manikantan(26) poured a can of petrol on the girl as she was coming out of home to go to the college at 7.30 in the morning and lighted a matchstick and set her on fire. The girl suffered severe burns as she was wearing polyester clothes. Hearing her cries local rushed in and doused the fire.

She was first rushed to government hospital at Chittor but as her condition deteriorated she was sent to CMC, Vellore. Locals nabbed the auto driver and gave him a good thrashing before handing over to the police.

Reddy said that Manikantan had misbehaved with the girl ten days ago after she rejected his advances.The girl reported the matter to her parents who warned Manikantan to mend his ways. Thereafter she started traveling in another auto to the college. Angered by the developments, Manikanta decided to kill the girl.

The incident comes a day after the state`s lady home minister Sabita Indra Reddy had announced stringent measures to curb the increasing love-related attacks on women.
