Singh's appointment as the Governor, soon after his retirement from the army in September last year, is being viewed by observers here as the Centre's strong message to streamline administration as the governor has a special power under Article 371-H of the Constitution in this sensitive border state.

The hill-state still remains underdeveloped and neglected. Different underground outfits, including ULFA and both factions of NSCN use Arunachal forests as their hideouts and as a corridor to escape to their bases across the Myanmar border.

Having 1400 km-long international border with China, Bhutan and Myanmar, Arunachal Pradesh is planning to reopen traditional trade routes with the neighbouring countries and a border trade centre has been established at Nampong recently in Changlang district bordering Myanmar.

There has been some tension in the state following former Chinese ambassador Sun Yuxi's statement claiming that Arunachal was Chinese territory.

The people here are anxiously waiting to hear from the prime miniter as to what transpired between the two sides on the status of Arunachal, particularly Tawang, the birth place of the 6th Dalai Lama, during his recent meeting with his Chinese counterpart.
