The separatist leader, who was returning to his Maisuma headquarters when his cavalcade was attacked, escaped unhurt, official sources said.

Activists of Hurriyat's hardline faction, headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, allegedly hurled stones at Malik's carcade leaving three injured, they said.

Two vehicles were also damaged, the sources said adding one of the injured, admitted to hospital, was attacked by a sharp-edged weapon.

The attackers were later chased away by police.

Malik was returning to his headquarters after handing over Rs 9.40 lakh to a committee for rehabilitation of two-dozen families whose houses were damaged in a gunbattle at Chinkipora last month.

Sopore, 50-km from Srinagar, is the hometown of Geelani and a strong base of Jamaat-e-Islami, a religious and political body.
