Rooney is extremely doubtful for this summer's tournament after it was confirmed on Wednesday he has broken more than one bone in his right foot.

Despite England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson hoping for Rooney's return to fitness at some time during the June 9-July 9 tournament, some are already considering the worst case scenario.

"We're in the dark about Wayne's injury a bit," said Cole.

"It's bad luck because he is an important player for us, but I would be honoured to step into Wayne's shoes. I would play anywhere the manager wants me to play.

"I have played in most positions before. When you play for England you cannot pick and choose.

"But if he wants me to play that role for England then I will do it. It is no problem."

Cole added: "Obviously, I am a different sort of player to Wayne. He is his own man and a great player, but I would give it a go and do my best for the team."
