As a patient player, he has the capacity to occupy the crease with immense concentration for hours at a stretch.

He joined fellow left-hander Matthew Hayden to craft an outstanding four double-century stands in the space of their initial ten appearances together.

In registering as many partnerships in excess of the 200 mark, they duly realised a feat that had never previously been bettered by any pair of openers in the entirety of Test match history.
