Reached number one for the first time in October and looked invincible in winning the Australian Open in January, beating compatriot Kim Clijsters in the final.
Various injuries and a lingering viral illness (cytomegalovirus) have badly disrupted her schedule since then, forcing her to miss Wimbledon.
But she returned to action at the Olympic Games and showed few signs of rustiness as she won the gold medal.
