The president said in his message: "My hearty congratulations to all of you on the historic and fantastic win that you have registered."

"The whole nation is proud of you. This victory has been made possible by admirable team effort. My hearty greetings to all of you and best wishes for all your matches in the future," Kalam added.

Vajpayee, the architect of the peace initiative with Pakistan that made the tour possible, also congratulated the people of Pakistan, especially the spectators and players, for their display of "unique warmth and sportsmanship in all the matches, which made the series truly historic and memorable".

Vajpayee said the Indian team deserved all credit "for their spectacular display in all departments of the game" which enabled them to win both the one-day as well as the Test series.

"It is a victory of teamwork, determination and a will to win," he said.

He specially picked Rahul Dravid's "tenacious double century" for praise and said, "he anchored the Indian innings and provided a strong foundation for a comprehensive win."

Vajpayee lauded cricket administrators of both countries for planning and executing the series in a "flawless manner".

Congress president Sonia Gandhi also congratulated the team, terming the victory over Pakistan "India's moment of glory".

"Congratulations Team India. This is India's moment of glory. Team India represents the young, resurgent new India," she said in a message to the team.
