MEMBERS OF the Shia community organised a procession in memory of the 72 martyrs of the Battle of Karbala on the premises of Bara Imambara here on Saturday.

The sprawling lawns of the Bara Imambara became a beehive of activity as thousands of devouts dressed in black gathered inside it to commemorate the annual ritual. Addressing the mourners from a pulpit, Maulana Murad Raza recalled the virtues of sacrifice and how the Prophet had to make innumerable of them during his lifetime for spreading the teachings of Quran.

He said the Prophet’s message was for entire mankind.

The cleric’s sermon was followed by recital of poetry eulogising the supreme sacrifice made by martyrs at Karbala. Subsequently, ‘taboots’ (coffins) symbolising the victims of the battle, carried by mourners started appearing one after the other. The processionists then took a round of the precincts in a slow-circular pattern.

Tears welled up in the eyes of the mourners comprising me, women and children and an air of solemnity prevailed inside the historical precincts of the Imambara as other speakers portrayed the tragic event in vivid details.

Stalls serving water and eatables were set up outside the main gate of the monument even as Anjuman Shabbiria, the organization that had made necessary preparatory arrangements for the event, put up posters and banners carrying slogans and sayings of the Caliphs at various places.

A farewell meeting was later held inside the Bara Imabara, which was addressed by Maulana Ishrat Rizvi.

Meanwhile, a procession on the occasion of Chehellum would be organised from the Nazim Saheb ka Imambara here on March 21.
