The Karnataka government has decided to recover every penny it spent in the last 13 years on the Jayalalithaa trial from the Tamil Nadu government.

Karnataka law minister TB Jayachandra told reporters on Thursday that his department alone had spent Rs 5.12 crore on legal expenses since the case was transferred here in 2003 on the instructions of the Supreme Court which was keen to ensure that the case proceeds without fear or favor.

"We are yet to calculate expenses incurred by the home department [towards security arrangements] each time she arrived in the city. Other departments too have spent huge sums of money," he said.

Jayachandra said that since the state government has decided to appeal against the Karnataka high court's acquittal of the Tamil Nadu CM before the Supreme Court, the expenses will shoot up considerably.
