“I am still in the chair,” Sayeed told HT. “I was asked (by Gandhi) to continue work. As a nominee of the Congress I will work in this coalition government.”

Sayeed had submitted his resignation to Gandhi and not chief minister Omar Abdullah after the crime branch found that his foster son had cheated during the 2009 Class 10 examination following allegations that education department officials had used “unfair means” to help the student.

Following his resignation, Abdullah divested Sayeed of his education portfolio in the state cabinet. The portfolio will remain with the chief minister till further orders.
