Kerala okays new 2,400 MW thermal power plant

The Kerala government gave its nod to set up a 2,400 MW thermal power plant in the state facing shortages of electricity supply.

The Kerala government on Wednesday gave its nod to set up a 2,400 MW thermal power plant in the state facing shortages of electricity supply.

Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan said the plant in Kasargode district in north Kerala would be a joint venture of the state-owned Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation and the Kerala State Electricity Board.

"The plant would come up on a 2,400-acre plot of land that is currently being owned by the Plantation Corporation at Chemmeeni," Achuthanandan told reporters.

Kerala faces acute shortage of electricity supply these days. The consumers have to bear half an hour curtailment at the peak time, during which 2,700 MW of electricity is required. But right now only 2,200 MW are generated.
