KGMU HoDs trying to shield junior docs
EVEN AFTER deciding upon stern action to be taken against junior doctors on strike and a ?go ahead? for the punitive action by the State Government, the KGMU authorities seem to be having second thoughts.

The salary deduction was decided upon according to an agreement between the KGMU and Resident Doctors’ Association (effected in September 2004). For the purpose, the Heads of Departments were asked to submit a list of doctors who had participated in the three strikes which were called on October 23, 2005, November 11, 2005 and January 16, 2006.
In January, Principal Secretary (Home) Alok Sinha had also asked the KGMU administration to deduct salary of doctors on strike.
The January 16 strike was called to protest the Nauchandi incident where several of the medicos were injured in a clash with GRP and civil police. The strike by residents compelled the varsity administration to go for ‘no work no pay’ policy.
However, in their reply submitted to varsity administration, most of the HoDs have made some excuse or the other to save the residents’ salary. They have either shown the ‘guilty’ residents ‘present’ during the strike period or have stated that the residents worked despite not signing the attendance register as part of the protest. Some HoDs have also given ambiguous replies.
Some residents said they were on duty and attended to patients.
They said they used to come during the night or early morning to attend to patients. These ‘devoted’ residents were from the Departments of Paediatrics, Orthopaedics and Surgery but said they did not sign the register to avoid a tussle.
Some residents did attend duty but the HoDs appear to be out to save all the residents.
KGMU Vice Chancellor is out of the city and would join office on Monday to take a decision on the issue.
