The focus on security of pilgrims has increased ever since the Varanasi blasts of March and the recent Mumbai explosions. Senior police officials monitored the movement of devotees through closed circuit TV sets installed in the control room of the Gyanwapi complex.
For the first time this year, about 20 cameras were also set up on way from Dashwaswamedh market to Chhatadwar, the entrance to the Gyanwapi complex.
In the morning, devotees, including saffron-clad Kanwarias, queued up from Dashwaswamedh to Chhatadwar.
Jawans and women constables of the police, the Provincial Armed Constabulary, the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) frisked devotees with metal detectors at different points before allowing them into the Garbha Grih of the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Additional personnel from other districts in Varanasi zone were called to assist the local administration.
