A 26-YEAR-OLD woman lawyer ended her life by setting herself ablaze and jumping from the terrace of her house in Cantonment on Saturday morning. The deceased’s father claimed his daughter was in love with a boy and the latter’s parents had refused to allow them to marry on Friday night.
On the other hand, primary investigation by the police revealed that the woman, Reeta was having an affair with another lawyer who’s marriage was to be solemnised on Saturday. Station House Officer (SHO), Cantonment, Udairaj Singh, said Reeta had possibly committed suicide because of this on her own but the police would lodge an FIR on the basis of the application given by Reeta’s father.
SSP Ashutosh Pandey said he would ensure a probe into the matter and a case under Section 306 IPC would be registered if it was found that the suicide had been provoked.
At the time of the incident, local residents ran to Reeta’s rescue when they saw her enveloped in flames on the terrace of her house. However, before the relatives could run upstairs, she jumped into the street.
Reeta died on the spot.
Reeta’s father Ram Sewak, a retired employee of the Railways and resident of Nai Basti, Nilmatha locality, said Reeta had been alone in the room at the time of the incident..
Initially, Ram Sewak did not say anything to the police about the reason for the suicide. But, later, he claimed that Reeta had an affair with a youth Manohar of the same locality for the last several years. On Friday night, Reeta’s elder sister and other family members had gone to Manohar’s house and requested the latter’s parents to allow the two to marry. But they had refused. Ram Sewak claimed Reeta could not bear the refusal.
On the other hand, SHO Udairaj said Manohar’s father told him that they had repeated requested Ram Sewak to allow Manohar and Reeta’s marriage but it was Ram Sewak who had refused to allow it.
Manohar’s parents also denied that anybody from Reeta’s family had visited them on Friday night, the SHO said.
