Laxman keen to play key role against Aussies

India's Vangipurappu Laxman says he is seeking to play a pivotal role again against Australia in their home Test series starting on Wednesday.

"It is going to be a challenging series," Laxman said on Tuesday. "I'm looking forward to making a major contribution."

The wristy batsman has emerged as a key player during the last two series between the sides and his contribution will have added importance for the hosts in the four-Test series following injury to Sachin Tendulkar.

Laxman hit 281 on Australia's previous tour in 2001, sparking an Indian comeback to win the second Test in Calcutta after being asked to follow on. India clinched the series 2-1.

Laxman scored 503 runs and averaged 83.83 in that series.

He also tormented Australia's bowlers to help India force a 1-1 away draw in 2003-04, hitting two hundreds while making 494 runs at an average of 82.33 in four Tests. His career average from 53 Tests is 46.56.
