Gonsalves lamented that cases of human rights violations, like encounter deaths, custodial torture, dowry deaths, rape and molestation, were on the rise in the country, especially in Uttar Pradesh.

He said in such a situation, it was the duty of human rights activists and lawyers to work for the welfare of the poor.

Gonsalves spoke in detail on the Right to Food and the issues raised in a PIL petition filed before the Supreme Court in this connection.

KK Roy and Atreyi Sen conducted the programme. Delegates from 27 districts took part in the workshop.

Those who addressed the gathering included Anup Srivastava, Mahesh Anand, Anita Srivastava, Ram Lochan Tiwari, S Ali Manjar, Tanveer Ahmad Siddiqui and others.

Others present on the occasion included High Court lawyers Nandita Adawal, Awadhesh Rai and several human rights activists.

Gonsalves also inaugurated an art exhibition of Ayay Jaitley, which depicted the life of prostitutes.
