The navy finalised the contract under the Foreign Military Sales Programme to Minnesota-based Lockheed Corp. Maritime Systems and Sensors.

Lockheed will also provide electronic, acoustic, communication and infrared systems and install the P-3 mission systems.

The work on the project is expected to last until July 2011.

Pakistan is slated to receive as many as eight P-3C Orion aircraft from the US, first of which should have been delivered last week.

Among other things the Orion is used for anti-submarine warfare, ship warfare, maritime surveillance and naval fleet support.
