The LTTE on Wednesday struck at the Sri Lankan Naval base in Galle in south Sri Lanka, destroying at least two gun boats, an informed source said.

An explosives-laden Sea Tiger boat had rammed into an Israeli-made Dvora Fast Attack Craft (FAC) at 7.45 am. In the explosion, some fishing craft were also damaged, the source said.

Fighting in and around the harbour was going said the private TV channel, MTV, at about 8.45 am.

But the Sri Lanka Ministry of Defense merely said that the Dakshina Naval Base at Galle had been attacked and that fighting was going on.

More details are awaited.

This is the first time the LTTE has attacked Galle, which is at Sri Lanka's southern extremity.

The Galle-Matara area is a recruiting ground for the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and is also the political base of the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the hawkish Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
