Chief Election Commissioner JM Lyngdoh on Tuesday took serious note of the distribution of school bags with photographs of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi despite a ban by the commission.

Talking to NDTV, Lyngdoh said: “It substantiates my argument that politicians are becoming worse and worse. We are getting more and more complaints but we will deal with them. We are checking everything.”

“I dare say that if people exceed the limit, I am afraid that there will be a whole lot of cases in the court," Lyngdoh said, indicating that those violating the expenditure norm would be taken to court.

Even as Lyngdoh breathed fire at Jogi, BJP workers in Chhattisgarh seized one more truck full of school bags with the Chief Minister's photo on them. The seizure was made in the Kurisapara area of Bhilai.

On Monday, a truck with 15,000 bags was seized. Both the trucks are now with the police. They were loaded at Dadar in Maharashtra, where such bags are manufactured, and were being taken to Ambikarpur in Chhattisgarh.

BJP member of Parliament Tarachand Sahu said the seizures exposed the designs of the state government. The BJP has also lodged a complaint with the police.

But Youth Congress secretary Vashishtha Narayan defended the government. Mishra said: “It was sent by the manufacturers from Dadar before the direction of the Election Commission to prohibit its transportation too. In any case, nobody can go on a looting spree.”

The Tribal Welfare Department of the Chhattisgarh government had some months back ordered 25 lakh bags to be distributed in rural schools of the state.
