Mahaveer Jayanthi was celebrated in Puducherry on Friday with traditional gaiety and fervour.
Members of the Jain community took out a procession through important thoroughfares with a portrait of Lord Mahaveer carried in a chariot.
Excise department ordered closure of all liquo shops, toddy and arrack retail sales outlets and also bar attached restaurants in the Union Territory.
