According to New Strait Times, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, Works Minister and president of the MIC said there was no need for alarm as the drop in birth rate among Indians in Malaysia was in line with the global trend.

Addressing the MIC, Samy Vellu said MIC is setting up a monitoring unit to keep track of Malaysian Government's programmes to increase the economic share of Malaysian Indians. He said said plans were also in place to increase Indian corporate equity ownership from 1.5 to 3.0 per cent by 2010.

The report also said the MIC also took note of the declining number of Indian civil servants in Malaysia and decided to submit a proposal to the Government to increase the number of Indian civil servants.

An economic convention would be organised in October to fine-tune activities for the Indian community to be included in the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
