A man, accused of more than a dozen criminal cases, on Wednesday tried to set himself afire in front of the official residence of Home Minister Shivraj Patil but his attempt was thwarted by policemen.

Drenched in kerosene, Mohinder Singh, a resident of Jahangir Puri, arrived at the Janpath Road residence of the Home Minister on Wednesday afternoon and threatened to immolate himself, police said.

Claiming harassment by police, Singh had already intimated the police and a section of the media in advance about his intentions.

Police personnel present in the high security area in New Delhi district arrested Singh and a case of attempt to suicide was registered against him at the Tughlak Road Police Station.

Singh has at least 14 cases, including that of rape, molestation and dowry harassment registered against him in Jahangirpuri.
