AN ELDERLY man was relieved of Rs 5,000 by a man who promised to get him Rs 2.5 lakh as compensation meant for gas victims. Complainant, SN Tiwari, 78, a resident of E-1/139, Arera Colony told police that an unidentified man who introduced himself as Jamil duped him.

The accused had approached Tiwari and told him that his claim for gas compensation has now reached the final stage and if the latter could pay some commission he would get Rs 2.5 lakh. Tiwari believed the stranger as he had filed the claim for compensation.

Jamil reportedly demanded Rs 20,000 but later came down to Rs 5,000 and Tiwari wrote a cheque of that amount handing it over to him. The accused vanished and did not return thereafter.

The address which he had mentioned near Gandhi Bhawan at Shamla Hills was found to be false. On the complainant’s report the police registered a case of fraud against the unidentified accused and launched a hunt for him.

The Habibganj police are investigating the case. Several persons have been cheated in this manner in the State capital in the last couple of years.
