MANAN CHANDRA and Pankaj Advani today qualified for the Asian Snooker Championship in the National Billiards and Snooker Tournament, organised by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, concluded at BHEL Senior Club. The Asian Championship will be organised in Sri Lanka later this year.

Pankaj and Chandra were selected for the Asian Championship after adding the points gained by them in the National Snooker Championship organised in Chennai and the National Billiards and Snooker Tournament held in Bhopal.

Such was the competition in the tournament that Yasin Merchant failed to qualify for the Asian Championship, though he had just four points less than Advani. Merchant, who was third in the tally, had 6404 points while Advani had 6408 points. Chandra had 6563 points.

On the concluding day, world snooker champion Pankaj Advani and Manan Chandra played their last match against each other. Advani, who played superbly during the last three days, upset Chandra by registering a 3-0 victory in straight frames. Chandra’s against the world champion could be gauged from the fact that he earned just 45 points as against the 283 points collected by Advani who won the match 96-00, 74-28 and 113-17.

Chief guest Industries Minister Babulal Gaur distributed prizes to the players. He congratulated the players for their good performance. On the occasion, Principal Secretary, Sports, Ranjana Chaudhary, Director Sports Sanjay Chaudhary, Jalaj Chaturvedi, Vikas Kharadkar, Rajesh Shakya and others were present.
