The Maoists blew up an under-construction panchayat bhavan in Latehar district in the wee hours on Tuesday. About a dozen armed naxalites packed dynamites inside the building and triggered the blast at around 1 am at Kope village, the police said.

The naxalites asked two villagers, who were sleeping inside the bhavan, to vacate the place before blowing it up. This was the fourteenth structure which the naxalites had razed to the ground in Jharkhand in the last fortnight.

Notes found from some spots said that the structures were being blown up to prevent security forces from using them as make-shift camps during their anti-naxal operation ahead of the April 16 and 23 elections in the state.
