Union Minister of Telecommunications Dayanidhi Maran on Wednesday filed a defamation case in the Madras High Court against MDMK general secretary Vaiko, his political rival, for alleging misuse of his official position as a minister.

Maran sought a compensation of Rs 10 million for the accusations Vaiko made against Maran and his party, the DMK, while campaigning for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections coming up next month.

Vaiko had accused Maran of misusing his official position as telecom minister to get government advertisements for Sun TV Network channels, run by the Maran family.

He also alleged that Maran had denied licenses to Raj TV and Jaya TV, two Tamil channels, from getting additional teleport facilities.

Maran urged a court direction to Vaiko to stop him from making such statements.

The minister also sought a direction to Jaya TV and the Dinamalar daily to stop reporting Vaiko's statements against him.
