The third-seeded Americans were beaten 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 by the fifth seeded Liezel Huber of South Africa and Ai Sugiyama of Japan in the semi-finals.

The 47-year-old Navratilova had been trying to beat Billie-Jean King's record of 20 titles at the All England Club but she will have to stay level with her fellow American after Saturday's disappointment.

She had also failed in her bid to retain her mixed doubles crown when she and partner Leander Paes were defeated by Zimbabwe pair Wayne and Cara Black in the third round 7-6 (9/7), 6-7 (5/7), 13-11.
