In a mass marriage ceremony organised in Amritsar twenty-one couples from poor families tied nuptial knots.

The ceremony, organised jointly by a charitable hospital and a non-governmental organisation, was indeed a dream come true for young men and women who could not afford the expenses of a marriage ceremony.
With marriages becoming a costly affair in India, the concept of mass-marriage is gaining popularity among the economically backward classes.
Balvinder Singh, organiser of the event, said that the ceremony was conducted for people who could not afford a lavish wedding. The organisation not only bears the entire expense of the marriage but also provides household items to the couples as gifts in order to help them to set up their homes.
