Officials said there was confusion as to whether wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel or seam bowler Laxmipathy Balaji would play. "The Indians had first ticked one name, indicating the player was going to play, and then also struck if off ... that's how the confusion happened," Sri Lankan cricket board's scorer Romesh Fernando said.

Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and Sri Lankan skipper Marvan Atapattu were seen checking out names on the team list at the entry to the pavilion.

Indian openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag opened the innings after Patel's name was added to the list.
