Ajimul Haq (22), a resident of Meerut, was arrested on Thursday for sending an e-mail last week threatening to blow up the World Trade Centre building in Mumbai.

The WTC website on June 16 had received an e-mail from an anonymous sender, posing as a resident of Nigeria, claiming he would blow up the building if he was not given $one million within a stipulated period, according to SSP Vijayprakash of the Meerut police. He had supplied a contact number in the e-mail, instructing officials to contact him immediately.

WTC officials had informed the Mumbai police who found that the e-mail had been sent from an internet connection dialled via a number in Ghosi Mohalla of Lalkurti area in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The Mumbai police informed their Meerut counterparts and found that the number belonged to Ayajul Haq, Ajimul’s father, who supplied police uniform caps for a living.

During interrogation, Ajimul admitted to sending the threatening e-mail to WTC and nine other addresses.

Ajimul confessed he had done so to teach a lesson to a person allegedly after Ajimul’s to-be-wife. He had sent the e-mail from a a fake ID but mentioned the mobile number of the person he was seemingly trying to implicate.

Confirming the arrest, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) in Mumbai, Brijesh Singh told HT: “A team from the Cuffe Parade police station was sent to Meerut after tracing the threat mails. Haq will be brought to Mumbai in the next couple of days for interrogation,” said Singh, refusing to give further details.
