THE STATE Assembly today witnessed an unusual scene when several BJP MLAs flaunted their sacred threads (Janeu) in unison. During the discussion on budget in the afternoon session, BJP MLA Lal Singh Arya tried to underline the ‘secular credentials’ of the BJP saying that had the BJP been communal the government would not have allocated budget for madarsas. To this, the CPM’s Ramlakhan Sharma demanded exemption from tax on the sacred thread.

He said none of the states had imposed tax on Janeu. He sought to know from the government how much tax the government had collected last year against Janeu. In the same vein he asked BJP MLAs if they had worn Janeu. Immediately, several BJP MLAs, including Dr Rajendra Pandey and Brijendra Tiwari, displayed their Janeu while pulling it out from under their kurtas.

A heated exchange of words took place between the ruling party members and the Opposition’s when the BJP MLAs said that by asking about the Janeu, Sharma had attacked their religion.

The Janeu business did not end here. Later, BSP’s IMP Verma asked whether the government had exempted from tax symbols of other religions also like caps, kripan and kangha.
