Sources said the militants surrounded Khan's house late Thursday night and fired more than 30 rounds but no one was injured.
Khan who was earlier chairman of the banned militant outfit People's United Liberation Front (PULF), and his family members were present at the time of the attack, sources said.
Khan, who was arrested some months ago and later freed, had said that he had given up the life of a militant and joined the national mainstream with the 'sole objective' of serving the people of the state.
Khan had announced his intention to contest the forthcoming Manipur assembly elections in february from Keirao assembly constituency in Imphal East district.
General Secretary of the election committee of M I Khan, Th Nabakumar told the media this morning that the attack on Khan was "very unfortunate."
Thursday's attack was the third one on Khan, he said adding that a militant outfit had earlier demanded payment of Rs. 50 lakhs from Khan.
