According to fire brigade sources, the fire started at around 5 pm after some workers who were doing the interiors of a shop on the first floor carelessly dropped a lighted ‘bidi’ or cigarette on waste package material that was lying on the floor. The workers then left the shop for some other business and no one noticed the smouldering fire, till smoke stared billowing out of the room.

Fire brigade personnel were called in, but the small fire had already been extinguished before they arrived at the scene. However, since the entire mall is centrally air-conditioned, the smoke got trapped inside the building. Later, a large exhaust fan was placed outside the building to draw out the smoke from the building.
