He said that he had not withdrawn support to the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) government led by Zoramthanga and the matter would be decided by the political affairs committee of the MDF, of which he is the president.
The committee had asked him to to resign, he said.
His resignation follows snapping of ties between the MNF and MDF in the recent Mara Autonomous District Council elections.
The MDF forged an alliance with the opposition Congress after the polls and was forming the executive committee of the council.
Thawla said he submitted his resignation after the political affairs committee of the MDF decided that he should resign.
The ruling MNF still has 22 legislators in the 40-member assembly while the opposition Congress has 12.
