Identified as Sameer Palija, the accused man was produced before a local court and remanded in police custody till March 9.
Based on a complaint registered by the doctor, the cyber cell of the city police Crime Branch tracked down the suspect to his home in Bangalore.

The police said the doctor had registered herself on a matrimonial site called www.jeevansathi.com and met Palija online. They said Palija introduced himself as Raj and said he was working for a World Bank project in Tokyo.

The police said the doctor, in subsequent conversations over the Internet, asked the person who called himself Raj to marry her.

They said the person going by the name of Raj told her she would have to wait till he had finished his project in Tokyo, and in the meantime asked her to send him nude or semi-nude photographs of hers.

The police said the doctor sent him such photographs as he had requested.

Then the person called Raj made his move.

“Raj told the lady doctor he could meet a friend of his named Sameer Palija at Pune to know more about him,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria. “And so on April 18, 2008, she went to meet him and stayed at a hotel.”

When the lady called up Palija, he recommended and booked a room for her at the Hotel Taj Blue Diamond.

“Sameer visited her at the hotel with a bouquet of flower and offered her some liquor,” added Maria. “The lady doctor realised that her drink was spiked. And when Sameer tried to undress her and force himself on her, she raised an alarm, causing Sameer to leave.”

Subsequently, the woman registered a complaint with the Crime Branch.

“We suspect Sameer, who earns nearly 1.5 lakh per month, used these tactics to blackmail women,” said Maria.

“Investigations are on to ascertain if he has done the same to any other woman.”
