MNNIT athletics meet concludes

THE THREE-DAY 39th Annual Athletics Meet of the Motilal Nehru national Institute of Technology concluded with some record-breaking performances by budding engineers at the MNNIT stadium on Saturday.

THE THREE-DAY 39th Annual Athletics Meet of the Motilal Nehru national Institute of Technology concluded with some record-breaking performances by budding engineers at the MNNIT stadium on Saturday.

Shahswat Nayak and Yukriti Singh emerged as the best male and female athletes of the meet, respectively. Shahswat Nayak reigned in long distance events like the 5000m, 3000m, 1500m, 8000m races and bagged four golds. Similarly, Gajendra Singh was adjudged the most promising athlete, while first year’s Jiren Susan Topno won the prize for best budding athlete (girls).

The overall team championship was bagged by B.Tech Final year students, while the team of MCA and B.Tech third year stood second and third in the meet.

Rajeev Lochan, Athletics College captain, proved best once again in the field events, bagging two golds and one silver. Vineet Singh Mehra showed an outstanding performance in the long distance and field events alike, winning one gold, five silvers and one bronze. Gajendra Singh, first year M.Tech student, won the prize for best budding athlete for boys by grabbing gold in shot put and bronze in hammer throw. The first year girls’ tug of war team outperformed other categories.

There was much participation from MCA and MMS students, especially in the girls’ events. Ruchi Singh came close to breaking the 100 m college record.

Pallavi Gupta of MCA- II won gold in fast cycling girls and 800 m.

Chief guest DIG Akhilesh Mehrotra lauded performances of MNNIT students and said gone were the days when sportspersons were underpaid. “Sports icons like Sania Mirza and Sachin Tendulkar can boast of their annual income in crores,” he said. He, however, lamented lack of proper sporting infrastructure in the country.
