Addressing a meeting in Mumbai to campaign for Congress candidates Milind Deora, Sunil Dutt and Gurudas Kamat, Kidwai said only Congress was competent to meet the challenges facing the country in the present day situation.

Asking the Muslims to keep their grievances aside and come out in large numbers to vote for Congress in the Lok Sabha polls, Kidwai said her party was committed to secularism and development of nation and had never deviated from its policies.

Coming down heavily on the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat for being unjust to minorities, she said the apex court judgement in the Best Bakery case had been welcomed by one and all.

The Congress leader criticised Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for changing his statement frequently and said a person who changed his stand often was not fit to rule the nation.

Kidwai said the exit polls were painting an incorrect picture and said she did not believe in them.

Speaking on the occasion, Congress leader Murli Deora said the recent statement of union Finance Minister Jaswant Singh in a section of the media to allow foreign direct investment in retail trade would ruin businessmen. He urged the people to vote for Congress, which alone could steer the nation to the path of progress.
