Abzal Khan, 45, and Suresh Kachhap, 42, were rescued from the mob by a police patrol team. Abzal later succumbed to his injuries. Suresh was taken into police custody. Police sources said Abzal was tied to a pole for about an hour and tortured. The villagers alleged the two men had, in an inebriated condition, forced their way inside the house of the woman and tried to outrage her modesty.

Rourkela SP Ravi Kant said around 15 villagers had been detained. Inspector AK Routray said a case had also been registered under against Suresh but added: “Suresh has said the allegation is false and that the villagers attacked them to settle some old scores.”
