"Though Orissa usually gets monsoon rain by June 10, this time it may be delayed by one week," Patro told reporters after attending a natural calamity committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Hoping for a good downpour across Orissa, the minister said some parts of the state had already experienced pre-monsoon rains and excess humidity condition in coastal region is an indication of monsoon arrival.

With monsoon round the corner, the state government has identified at least 593 vulnerable points on river embankments prone to breaches. "The chief minister has issued a direction for repair of weak and vulnerable river embankments before onset of the monsoon," he said.
