Members of Mosque Jamat and Thowheed Jamaat, involved in a dispute for some time over the property rights, clashed during the Friday prayers at S P Pattinam on Saturday, police said today.

A police constable posted outside the mosque was injured in stone pelting and 34 people were detained in connection
with the incident.

All of them were later let off after more than 500 people laid siege to the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police demanding their release, police said. Police pickets had been posted in the area to prevent any untoward incidents, they said.

Revenue Divisional Officer Ilangovan said both the groups had been advised to approach the court to settle the dispute.
