According to neighbours in the Uzanbazar locality, Deepti Singh and her mechanic husband Pankaj Singh had a bitter quarrel. Soon after Pankaj left home after 1 pm, Deepti, seething, sprinkled kerosene on the sleeping baby and set her on fire.

Deepti tried committing suicide thereafter, but neighbours stopped her in the nick of time.

“The woman has confessed to killing her own baby in a fit of anger,” said Additional City SP Debajit Deuri. “A case has been registered against her in the Latasil police station.”
