THE MP State Electricity Board (MPSEB) today assured that it won’t make a hole in the pocket of its consumers but is committed to make up the multi-crore-rupees expenditure to be incurred on account of pay revision of its 55,000 staffers through five per cent reduction in transmission and distribution (T&D) losses.

Sources, however, concede that it won’t be an easy task for the MPSEB to bring down the T&D losses by 5 per cent, given the fact that in last financial year it has brought down these losses only by little over one per cent. The MPSEB T&D losses came down to 42 per cent in the last financial year (ending March 2006) from 43½ per cent in the corresponding year.

If the MPSEB brings down T&D losses by 1 per cent it will save Rs 80 crore revenue annually. With the loss making MPSEB deciding to revise the salary of its employees, it is likely to incur the additional monthly expenditure of Rs 10 crore, and will have to clear a whopping arrear of Rs 260 crores due to be paid to its employees.

Talking to media persons, MPSEB secretary P K Vaishya allayed the fears of some section of the employees that the Board might backtrack from its decision of pay revision if the T&D losses didn’t come down by 5 per cent. We are going to pay the revised salaries, he assured, adding that the workers’ bodies were content with the revision.
