Usually clad in a lungi and kurta and gold framed spectacles, the Uttar Pradesh don Mukhtar Ansari lives in style, drives in a bullet-proof vehicles, one of which even bears a the theIslamic lucky number -- 786.

A regular centre of attraction at Darul Shafa, the Uttar Pradesh MLAs hostel in Lucknow, he has made it big in the power game wending his ways through many political parties.

Born in a small village of Yusufpur Mohammadab in Ghazipur 39 years ago, he has graduated from Gazipur.

His politics is his heritage. His father and grandfather were freedom fighters. His brothers Afzal has been a Communist party MLA four times and Samajwadi Party MLA once.

His uncle Shaukat Ansari as a close friend of Nehru and had served as Indian ambassador in many countries and then as a Governor of Orissa before becoming a Member of Parliament.

His uncle was in United Nationa and later Aligarh Muslim University vice Chancellor.

An independent MLA in the 14th Uttar Pradesh Assembly, he was a BSP MLA earlier. He contested Lok Sabha polls from Mau on a BSP ticket but lost it.

Booked under TADA, the mafia king had been in Tihar jail for months. His adversaries describe him as Dawood's henchman, drug smuggler but he denied all of it and challenges any one to prove the charges.

As Uttar Pradesh goes through another churning for Lok Sabha polls, Mukhtar Ansari's moves would be keenly monitored.
