"In the 44 years of Congress rule, the size of the country shrank and the BJP has also failed to protect the nation," the Samajwadi Party chief said addressing party rallies here and in Bilaspur.

There were attempts earlier to divide the nation in the name of religion and today similar attempts are being made in the name of regionalism, Yadav said referring to the violence in Assam and Bihar.

"Both Congress and BJP are instigating the people in the name of regionalism," he alleged and asked the people to reject both of them.

Yadav said his party would give top priority to uniting the nation and not to form a government.

Calling for strengthening agriculture sector, he said no country could become a developed nation if it ignored the sector.

Earlier addressing a public meeting in Bilaspur, Yadav came down heavily on Ajit Jogi for "failing" to take the state rich with natural resources on the path of development.

He accused both Congress and BJP of indulging in "rampant corruption" and claimed that the SP was fast emerging as the third force in the national politics.

SP would be contesting all the 11 Lok Sabha seats from Chhattisgarh in next year's general elections, he said.

Later talking to reporters, Yadav welcomed the ceasefire along Indo-Pak border saying "we are in favour of a ceasefire if Pakistan is sincere in its efforts to restore peaceful relations with India."

He also wondered as to why BJP was raking up the ram temple issue whenever he assumed the reins of Uttar Pradesh and accused the saffron party of instigating the people in the name of religion.
