Mumbai violence: BEST suspends its operations

Buses have been taken off their routes since 2 pm till "situation improves in the city.

The Bombay Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) on Sunday suspended its operations in Mumbai following the protests over the alleged desecration of the bust of Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray's late wife.

Buses have been taken off their routes since 2 pm till "situation improves in the city," adding that those buses which are already enroute will, however, reach their destinations, BEST PRO AS Tamboli said.

The bust of Meenatai, the late wife of Thackeray, was allegedly desecrated by unidentified miscreants on Sunday morning sparking violent protests by Shiv Sainiks who torched a bus here as police used teargas to disperse the protestors.
