Patil, while addressing a gathering in Udaipur, last Sunday, had mentioned that the introduction of veil system in India resulted as a measure to protect women from Mughal aggressors.

The JAC which met in Hyderabad under the leadership of Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, former MP and president, All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) however, termed the remarks as "factually incorrect and unacceptable" and chose to call it as "distortion of history." The MIM also demanded withdrawal of remarks by Patil or else `threatened' to abstain from Presidential voting.

Asaduddin Owaisi, the lone MIM MP recently met UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and assured his party's support to the UPA nominee.

The MIM has strength of five MLAs in Andhra Pradesh Assembly.
